HOW OFTEN SHOULD I FERTILIZE?
It is important that all plantings be fertilized on a regular basis. On average, both lawns and planter beds should be fed every 10 weeks. Use 15-15-15 for both lawns & plantings. Application rates are as follows:
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO CONTROL WEEDS?
The best way to control weeds is to stop them before they invade your yard. This is best achieved by applying a pre-emergent herbicide such as Dimension. You may also consult your local garden center for a good pre-emergent product. Pre-emergents form a barrier on top of the soil that kill weed seeds when they germinate. Pre-emergents should be applied to both lawns and planter areas at least twice a year, 3 times during the first year of a newly planted landscape. The most important pre-emergent application should be made in late February to control crabgrass, then apply every 4 to 6 months after that. Do NOT use pre-emergents in areas where seeds will be planted such as annual flower beds, vegetable gardens and on newly seeded lawns!
For existing weeds, there just is no avoiding having to pull them out by hand. Unfortunately this leaves parts of the root system underground which often regenerates more weeds than the one you just pulled. The best way to attack existing weeds is to spray them with Roundup. Get a small 1 or 2 gallon tank sprayer and spot spray weeds as necessary. Be careful not to spray on desirable plantings and lawns.
If you have broadleaf weeds growing in your lawn such as dandelions and clover, you can apply any weed-n-feed or spray product containing Trimec. Be careful not to use on any planter areas as it will kill your shrubs and groundcovers. When using a weed-n-feed product, be aware that the formulation usually does not contain correct amounts of both weed killer and fertilizer to adequately take care of both issues. Often a second or third application may be necessary. Trimec products can be dangerous so apply with caution and make sure you follow all safety precautions on the label.
To eliminate grassy weeds from planter areas, there are a handful of “grass-getter” type products available. Consult with your local garden center for those. Do NOT use any grass-type herbicides on your lawn as they will cause damage to your lawn.
